Westerland® is a classic shrub rose created by Kordes, featuring brilliant copper-orange flowers, a strong fragrance, and abundant, repeat blooming from June until the first frost. With an upright habit and robust growth, it reaches approximately 150 cm in height and 80 cm in width and remains one of the best-known fragrant shrub roses from the Kordes house, though it can also be trained as a climber when its long branches are tied to a support.
Choose it if you want a shrub rose with a warm and energetic presence in your garden, combining strong fragrance, vibrant color, and exceptional frost resistance in a vigorous plant that is easy to integrate into the garden.
Westerland® brings warmth and color to the garden almost instantly. The flowers open in bright copper-orange tones, and their shades can shift subtly depending on the weather and the maturity of the flower, creating a lively display with natural color variations.
Introduced by W. Kordes’ Söhne in 1969, Westerland® has remained a classic variety for decades thanks to its robust growth, strong fragrance, and remarkable frost resistance.
The semi-double flowers are approximately 10–12 cm in diameter and are carried on an upright bush. The intense fragrance is one of the variety’s defining features, making Westerland® particularly suitable for planting near walkways, terraces, or frequently used areas.
Kordes assigns it a high level of general disease resistance and describes it as extremely frost-hardy. However, the current profile of the variety also indicates a higher sensitivity to black spot, powdery mildew, and rust. In areas or periods with high disease pressure, good air circulation, balanced fertilization, and careful foliage care are therefore recommended.
Its upright habit makes it suitable for solitary planting, in groups, in informal hedges, or as a decorative background shrub, where it can bring color, volume, and fragrance.
Quality 1+ (premium). The bushes are 2-year-old, healthy specimens, obtained through grafting onto the strongest rootstock currently available. This provides the roses with vigor and great long-term durability.
