Gertrude Jekyll is a shrub English rose created by David Austin, known for its strong old rose fragrance, large deep pink flowers, and repeat blooming.
Its vigorous, upright shrub fits perfectly in a spot where the blooms can be viewed up close and followed from the appearance of the buds to the full opening of the rosettes. It naturally reaches approximately 110 cm in height and 90 cm in width, but it can also be trained as a climbing rose when its long canes are tied to a support.
Choose Gertrude Jekyll if fragrance is one of the main reasons you are planting a rose and you can provide it with enough space to develop naturally.
The story of the variety and its name →
In 1986, David Austin decided to paint in bright pink flowers made up of approximately 80 petals each. And, to make the rose complete, he endowed it with a strong, refined fragrance, naming his entire creation Gertrude Jekyll.
That is how this spectacular English rose, full of color and romance, came to life, a rose that should not be missing from any garden in the world. And, especially, from any of our gardens, be it in Bârlad, Azuga, Timișoara, Murfatlar, or wherever our friends write to us that they wish to beautify their lives with this wonderful rose.
The variety is named after Gertrude Jekyll, one of the most famous British garden designers and authors. It is a fitting name for a rose that brings together the rich form of the flowers, the fragrance of old roses, and the warm atmosphere that a well-tended garden builds over time.
In 2025, the Gertrude Jekyll rose received the "World’s Favourite Rose" title from the World Federation of Rose Societies. Almost four decades after its introduction, it continues to be chosen and admired in gardens around the world.

The strong fragrance, with the refined character of old roses, is one of the reasons why Gertrude Jekyll remains so highly appreciated. When a new flower opens, being close to the shrub allows you to discover its fragrance and the rosette shape, petal by petal.
The intense pink attracts the eye from a distance, and the large, rich flowers give the shrub a clear presence in the garden. The tightly swirled buds open gradually, so you can watch the transformation of each bloom until it reaches its full rosette form.
The flowers return in waves throughout the season. After the first flush, other buds appear, and each return brings more rosettes to admire, more flowers to smell, and another reason to stop by the rose.
As the plant matures, the space chosen for it gains more volume and presence. You no longer watch just every individual flower, but the entire evolution of the shrub, from the new canes and the appearance of the buds to the return of color after each break between the flowering waves.
Famous Roses recommends Gertrude Jekyll to those who want more than just a pink rose: a variety with a strong old rose fragrance, rich flowers, bright color, and a presence that becomes even more beautiful as the shrub matures.
The shrub has a vigorous and upright habit and needs enough space to grow naturally. It is not the right choice for a spot where the plant must remain very low, very narrow, or strictly contained.
See less →How to integrate it into your garden →
Plant it along a pathway, near the entrance, by the terrace, or near an area where you spend time. In a frequented spot, the fragrance can be enjoyed as you pass through the garden, when you drink your coffee outside, or when you lean in to see what flower has opened next.
You can also choose a spot that you can see from the window or the terrace. This way, you can watch the appearance of the buds, the opening of the flowers, and the change in the shrub from one flowering wave to the next.
The upright habit makes it recommended for mixed borders, rose beds, or flowering hedges. The bright pink can be highlighted by plants with green, gray, or silver foliage and by flowers in shades of white, blue, or purple.
During periods of rich flowering, you can pick a few rosettes for a vase, a bouquet, or a floral arrangement. The flowers can bring the same color and fragrance to your table that you enjoy in the garden, or they can become a bouquet offered to a loved one.
